Limite d’une fonction en un point
Définition
Soient \(a, \ell \in \mathbb{R}\) et \(f\) une fonction définie sur un voisinage \(]a-x_0; a+x_0[\) (éventuellement privé de \(\{a\}\)), \(x_0 > 0\).
-
Si \(f(x)\) tend vers \(\ell\) quand \(x\) tend vers \(a\), on écrit \(\lim\limits_{x \to a} f(x) = \ell\). Si elle existe, cette limite est unique.
-
Si \(f(x) \to +\infty\) (resp. \(-\infty\)) quand \(x \to a\), on écrit \(\lim\limits_{x \to a} f(x) = +\infty\) (resp. \(-\infty\)).
-
La limite à droite (resp. à gauche) en \(a\), notée \(\lim\limits_{x \to a^+} f(x)\) (resp. \(\lim\limits_{x \to a^-} f(x)\)), est la limite quand \(x\) tend vers \(a\) avec \(x > a\) (resp. \(x < a\)).
-
\(\lim\limits_{x \to a} f(x) = \ell \Leftrightarrow \lim\limits_{x \to a^-} f(x) = \lim\limits_{x \to a^+} f(x) = \ell\).
Formes indéterminées : \(\dfrac{0}{0}\), \(\dfrac{\pm\infty}{\pm\infty}\), \(+\infty - \infty\), \(0 \times (\pm\infty)\).
Proposition
On admet les limites de référence suivantes (avec \(n \in \mathbb{N}^*\)) :
-
\(\lim\limits_{x \to 0^+} \dfrac{1}{x} = +\infty\), \(\lim\limits_{x \to 0^-} \dfrac{1}{x} = -\infty\).
-
\(\lim\limits_{x \to 0^+} \dfrac{1}{\sqrt{x}} = +\infty\).
-
\(\lim\limits_{x \to 0^+} \dfrac{1}{x^n} = +\infty\).
-
\(\lim\limits_{x \to 0^-} \dfrac{1}{x^n} = +\infty\) si \(n\) pair, \(-\infty\) si \(n\) impair.
Exemple
Calculer les limites suivantes :
-
\(\lim\limits_{x \to 3} \dfrac{\sqrt{x+1}-2}{x-3}\)
-
\(\lim\limits_{x \to -1} \dfrac{2x^3+2x^2+x+1}{x^2+3x+2}\)
-
\(\lim\limits_{x \to 4} \dfrac{\sqrt{x}-2}{x-4}\)
-
\(\lim\limits_{x \to 3^+} \dfrac{x+2}{3x - x^2}\)
-
\(\lim\limits_{x \to 3^-} \dfrac{x+2}{3x - x^2}\)
-
\(\lim\limits_{x \to 1^-} \dfrac{x^2 - 1}{|x-1|}\)
Application
On considère les fonctions :
\[f(x)=\begin{cases}-x + 1, & x \ge 3 \\ x^2 - 4x + 1, & x < 3\end{cases} \qquad g(x)=\begin{cases}\dfrac{x^2+1}{-x+3}, & x \leq 2 \\ 1 - ax^2, & x>2\end{cases}\]
-
Calculer \(\lim\limits_{x \to 3^+} f(x)\) et \(\lim\limits_{x \to 3^-} f(x)\). \(f\) admet-elle une limite en \(3\) ?
-
Déterminer une valeur de \(a\) pour laquelle \(g\) admet une limite en \(2\).
Limite d’une fonction en \(\pm\infty\)
Proposition
Soit \(n \in \mathbb{N}^*\), \(k \in \mathbb{R}^*\).
-
\(\lim\limits_{x \to +\infty} x^n = +\infty\) ; \(\lim\limits_{x \to -\infty} x^n = +\infty\) si \(n\) pair, \(-\infty\) si \(n\) impair.
-
\(\lim\limits_{x \to \pm\infty} \dfrac{k}{x^n} = 0\).
-
Pour \(P, Q\) deux polynômes de termes de plus haut degré \(ax^n, bx^m\) :
\[\lim\limits_{x \to \pm\infty} \dfrac{P(x)}{Q(x)} = \lim\limits_{x \to \pm\infty} \dfrac{ax^n}{bx^m}.\] -
Si \(f \ge 0\) et \(\lim\limits_{x \to +\infty} f(x) = \ell \ge 0\), alors \(\lim\limits_{x \to +\infty} \sqrt{f(x)} = \sqrt{\ell}\). Si \(\lim f = +\infty\), alors \(\lim\sqrt{f} = +\infty\). (Idem en \(-\infty\) ou en un point \(a\).)
Exemple
Calculer les limites suivantes :
-
\(\lim\limits_{x \to +\infty} \dfrac{2x^2 +5}{4x^2}\)
-
\(\lim\limits_{x \to -\infty} \dfrac{-3x^3 + x}{x^3}\)
-
\(\lim\limits_{x \to +\infty} (1 + 5x^2 + 8x)\)
-
\(\lim\limits_{x \to -\infty} (-5x^3 + 1)\)
-
\(\lim\limits_{x \to +\infty} \sqrt{x^2 + 2x + 5}\)
-
\(\lim\limits_{x \to +\infty} \dfrac{4 + 2x^3}{3x^3 + 5x^2 + 1}\)
Application
Calculer les limites suivantes :
-
\(\lim\limits_{x \to -\infty} \dfrac{(2-\sqrt{3})x^3 - x^2}{2x^2 - 3}\)
-
\(\lim\limits_{|x| \to +\infty} \dfrac{|x| - 3x}{|x+5|}\)
-
\(\lim\limits_{x \to +\infty} \sqrt{\dfrac{x+1}{x-4}}\)
-
\(\lim\limits_{x \to -\infty} \sqrt{3x^2 - 5x + 1}\)

|---|---|---|---|---|
| \(\ell\) | \(\ell' \neq 0\) | \(\ell + \ell'\) | \(\ell\ell'\) | \(\ell/\ell'\) |
